Saudi Arabia Sentences Five to Death Over Jamal Khashoggi's Murder ¶
On December 23, 2019, Saudi Arabia's public prosecutor announced that five individuals had been sentenced to death and three others to prison terms in the high-profile murder case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
According to the prosecutor, the five individuals sentenced to death were involved in the premeditated murder of Khashoggi, a US resident and critic of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018. Khashoggi had entered the consulate to obtain documentation certifying his divorce, which would have allowed him to remarry.
After weeks of repeated denials, the Saudi government eventually acknowledged that its officials were behind the gruesome murder. The whereabouts of Khashoggi's dismembered body remain unknown.
Turkish intelligence agencies concluded that Khashoggi was killed in a premeditated murder, while the CIA has reportedly found that Prince Salman likely ordered the killing. However, Riyadh has consistently denied that the crown prince was involved.
Former high-profile Saudi royal adviser Saud al-Qahtani was investigated but not charged and was released.
