December 23, 2019, marked a crucial day for Watford FC as they secured their second win of the season against Manchester United at Vicarage Road.
The Hornets' victory, coupled with their improved position in the Premier League table, has given new boss Nigel Pearson a glimmer of hope in their fight against relegation.
"We are in a difficult situation, but I believe we can get out of it," Pearson said, exuding confidence in his team's abilities.
Watford's win was largely thanks to a series of unfortunate events for Manchester United, including a David de Gea error that allowed Ismaila Sarr's mishit shot to bounce through his arms and strike him in the face.
Troy Deeney compounded United's misery with a penalty goal after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's foul on Sarr.
Despite the introduction of Paul Pogba as a substitute, Manchester United failed to register a shot on target until the hosts were already two goals ahead.
Watford's win has moved them within six points of safety and level on points with Norwich in 19th place.
"I thought we did some good things, deserved to win the game, and there is more to come," Pearson added, highlighting his team's potential for improvement.
