Speaker Beatrice Elachi's failure to convene a special sitting as requested by Minority Leader David Mberia has led to a temporary reprieve for Nairobi County Assembly Speaker. The MCAs had planned to impeach Elachi but have since deferred their plan to the first week of January next year.
According to sources, the MCAs are waiting for an advisory opinion from the Attorney General on the State of affairs after Governor Mike Sonko was barred from accessing his office over a corruption case.
Minority Whip Peter Imwatok, however, remains determined to table a censure motion against Governor Mike Sonko, claiming he has collected 82 signatures to support his push. Imwatok's wing has failed to get audience with the Speaker, with sources indicating that they are drafting another request for a special sitting in January.
Even as Council of Governors (CoG) Chair Wycliffe Oparanya opens a battlefront at the Supreme Court to challenge the barring of governors from office, Sonko and his allies have resorted to a reconciliatory tone, reaching out to the assembly leaders and the leadership of parties to calm the storm at City Hall.
On a different note, Sonko was spotted in Pumwani Hospital's maternity wing sharing Christmas gifts with new mothers, a move seen as an attempt to improve his public image.
