December 22, 2019, marked a significant day in the politics of Ukambani as Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua publicly called for the retirement of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka from politics.

Mutua, who has recently warmed up to ODM leader Raila Odinga, stated that the Ukambani region is in dire need of fresh ideas to tackle its current challenges. He believes that Kalonzo is not the right man for the job, despite having served well in the past.

“Ukambani people have previously been viewing Kalonzo Musyoka as the only option. He has served well, but it’s time to hand over the reins of leadership. Current challenges require fresh approaches, he is just not the man for this job,” Mutua said during an interview on K24’s Punchline.

Notably, Mutua has already informed Raila Odinga of his intention to run for the highest office in 2022. He has been advised by Raila to hit the ground running with nationwide campaigns and has promised to support Mutua’s dream of becoming the President.

It is worth mentioning that Mutua first ran for Machakos governor on a Wiper ticket in the 2013 elections but later fell out with Kalonzo. He went on to form the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party (MCC), which has given Wiper a run for its money in Ukambani. Mutua has also rallied the other two Ukambani governors; Charity Ngilu (Kitui) and Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) to turn against Kalonzo.
