On December 23, 2019, the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved a $272 million loan for Tanzania to construct a new international airport in Dodoma.
The new airport, located in Msalato, 12 km from Dodoma, is expected to take four years to complete and will be able to handle 1 million passengers annually.
According to AfDB, as of November 2019, its lending portfolio to Tanzania stood at $2.1 billion, with over half of it going to transport projects.
Tanzania currently has 27 airports on the mainland, excluding Zanzibar, with the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) operating all of them except for Kilimanjaro International, which is managed by the state-owned Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO).
Meanwhile, airports in the Zanzibar Archipelago are under the jurisdiction of the Zanzibar Airports Authority.
