On Sunday, December 22, 2019, al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack on a construction site in Mandera, Kenya's northern county.
The militants, who have intensified attacks along the Somalia-Kenya border, targeted a site located at the Mandera-Arabia-Lafey road, destroying equipment valued at approximately Sh38 million.
The destroyed equipment included an excavator, flat roller machine, shift foot roller, and a pressure pump. Miraculously, two guards manning the site managed to escape unharmed.
Outgoing North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway.
Al-Shabaab's recent attacks have targeted civilians and government installations, including a December 2019 bus attack that killed eight police reservists and led to the arrest of eight suspects.
