As the year comes to a close, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the transfer of thousands of classroom teachers across the country. The transfers are part of the commission's ongoing delocalisation programme, which was launched in 2017.

According to TSC boss Nancy Macharia, 1,010 principals in secondary schools and 1,621 head teachers in primary schools have been transferred. The transfers are taking place at the county level, with transfer letters already released to affected teachers.

Teachers are expected to report to their new duty stations by January 3, 2020, for administrators, and January 6, 2020, for teachers. The exercise is undertaken at the end of the year to minimize disruption to the learning process, Ms Macharia explained.

However, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has reported that some of the transferred tutors have quit their jobs, while others have sought employment in county governments. Despite this, the TSC has maintained that the transfers will go on unhindered.
