Former MP Noah Wekesa has sparked controversy with his claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta will not step down in 2022, as required by the constitution.

Speaking at the funeral of Mama Perita Nelima Tabu on December 22, 2019, Wekesa said he knows that President Kenyatta has no plans to retire.

'Mungu amenipatia kipawa ya kujua mambo fulani, watu wanasema Uhuru atastaafu 2022 akiwa na miaka 60, lakini Uhuru haendi popote,' Wekesa said.

Wekesa's comments have reignited the debate on the constitution, which requires the president to step down after two terms.

Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), had earlier called for the constitution to be amended to allow President Kenyatta to remain in power.

However, President Kenyatta has consistently denied any plans to remain in power beyond 2022, saying he will respect the constitution.

Other politicians, including Moses Wetangula, have also weighed in on the debate, with some calling for the constitution to be amended to allow President Kenyatta to remain in power.
