Published on December 22, 2019, the government announced plans to construct the Mau Mau Road, a 150-kilometer road that will traverse four Central Kenya counties.
The road will start at Gataka in Githunguri, Kiambu County, and terminate at Njengu, Nyeri County, where it will join the Nyeri-Nyahururu Highway.
Passing through 69 shopping centers in Nyeri, Muranga, and Kiambu, the road will also have a branch through the Aberdare Forest to Njabini in Kinangop, Nyandarua County.
The road is expected to be completed in four phases over a two-year period, with a total budget of Sh30 billion.
Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the project will be handled by four contractors and will be a tribute to the Mau Mau freedom fighters who made huge sacrifices for the liberation of the country.
“President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged that before his term ends, Mau Mau Road will be done in honor of freedom fighters who made huge sacrifices for the liberation of this country,” said Macharia.
