On Saturday, December 21, 2019, Liverpool won their first-ever Club World Cup title at the Khalifa International Stadium, defeating Brazil's Flamengo 1-0 in extra time.
The match was a closely contested one, with both teams creating scoring opportunities throughout the game. However, it was Liverpool's Roberto Firmino who scored the winning goal in the ninth minute of extra time, securing a historic victory for the European champions and Premier League leaders.
The win marked Liverpool's first-ever Club World Cup title and made them the second English team to lift the trophy after Manchester United in 2008.
Despite the win, the game was marred by an injury to Liverpool's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who landed badly after an aerial challenge and hurt the same right knee that he suffered ligament damage to in 2018.
Qatari referee Abdulrahman Al Jassim initially pointed to the spot for a penalty after Sadio Mane was fouled by Rafinha, but later changed his decision after reviewing the VAR monitor, ruling that the incident occurred outside the penalty area.
The game was settled in extra time, with Liverpool's counter-attack leading to Firmino's winning goal. The Brazilian calmly cut inside, lost his marker, and drilled home the winner.
