On December 21, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko made a surprise visit to Pumwani Hospital, marking his first public appearance since his release from custody on December 11, 2019.
Just 10 days prior, Sonko had been released from custody after depositing a Kshs15 million cash bail, following his chaotic arrest in Voi on December 6, 2019.
During his visit to the hospital, Sonko, dressed in a Santa Claus suit and eyeglasses adorned with the Kenyan flag, distributed gifts to mothers, including basins, diapers, and towels.
While in the suit, Sonko advised Kenyans to remain generous to one another, especially during the festive season.
"Watu wangu (my people) as we usher in this festive season to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus, I wish to encourage you all to extend your generosity and kindness, however little, to your neighbors and community. As Mother Teresa once said that it is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving," Sonko wrote on Facebook.
It's worth noting that Sonko's visit to the hospital came after he was named the Volunteer Champion of the Year 2019 on December 5, 2019, and was appointed as the Good Deeds Day Ambassador for Kenya by the Good Deeds Day Foundation of Israel.
