On December 22, 2019, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen spoke out against the government's war on graft, calling it a political witch-hunt targeting critics of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and the handshake.
Murkomen accused the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of working together to frustrate governors who oppose the BBI and the handshake.
“Governors, if you do not support BBI and the handshake, they will instigate imaginary corruption cases against you and remove you from office, your cases will go on until 2027,” he said.
Murkomen also defended his role in the legal defense team of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, saying that as a senator, his first responsibility is to protect counties and county governments.
“Many of you are just speaking here but you don’t know the truth. You are busy bashing me for joining Sonko’s defence team. Let me tell you…the first responsibility of the Senate is not oversight. Go and read Article 96 of the Constitution,” he explained.
