On December 21, 2019, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia announced that the government had blacklisted 15 road construction companies.
The move was made in response to a new policy by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to list non-performing firms contracted to work on different projects.
According to Mr. Macharia, the 15 companies had delivered shoddy jobs and failed to meet deadlines, with some even abandoning projects after receiving a 10% down payment.
Speaking at Kinyona, where he toured the Mau Mau Road project, Mr. Macharia stated that the government would not work with these companies as long as they were in office.
The Mau Mau Road project, which will connect Kiambu, Murang'a, and Nyeri counties, is expected to be commissioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta next month.
Mr. Macharia emphasized that the project would be a game-changer in the central region, providing access for agricultural activities and creating employment opportunities for local youths.
