Albert Tanui and Marion Kibor Win AK Cross Country Series in Ol Kalau ¶
Albert Tanui from the Rongai Athletics Club and Marion Kibor from the Kahawa Barracks emerged as the winners of the AK Cross Country Series held in Ol Kalau, Nyandarua County on Saturday, December 21, 2019.
Tanui outclassed over 200 athletes to finish in 30 minutes 15.33 seconds, winning his first ever 10km race. He expressed his happiness, stating, 'I am so happy; this is my first time to run in a competitive 10km race in cross country, I am using the cross county to prepare for a few road races that I’m planning to run early next year,' in an interview with Citizen Digital.
Marion Kibor, on the other hand, clocked 34:15.62 to beat Betty Chepkemoi by a mere second, securing the top spot in the women’s race. She revealed her target, saying, 'My target is to gauge how far I am now on my training. The aim is to win in the military championship so that I can qualify for national trials; I believe I have what it takes to represent Kenya in Togo, next year.'
Other winners of the day included Gideon Rono in the U-20 8km race, Mourine Cherotich in the 6km junior women category, and several others.
The AK Cross Country Series will continue with its fourth leg in Kapsokwony on December 28, followed by the fifth and final leg in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on January 4, before the National Cross Country Championships cum Trials for Africa Cross Country Championships and Mandatory AK Anti-Doping Awareness for Competing Athletes on February 8, in Nairobi.
