On December 17, 2019, Modern Coast Express Limited thought they had finally received the green light to resume operations after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) lifted the suspension on their operational license. However, the company's relief was short-lived as the police intercepted two of their buses on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, citing that the ban was yet to be lifted.
It turned out that the NTSA had indeed terminated the suspension, but the news had not reached the police in time. The authority had made the announcement on December 12, 2019, stating that the company's access to the NTSA portal had been deactivated to limit any activities on their 88 vehicles, as the investigation continued.
Two weeks prior to the incident, on December 5, 2019, two Modern Coast buses collided at Kiongwani area on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, killing seven people and injuring 62 others. The incident sparked a probe into the company's operations, with the NTSA taking swift action to suspend their license.
Despite the reinstatement of their license, Modern Coast Buses have been in the spotlight for recurrent accidents. In a separate incident, the company's buses were on the spot for accidents, raising concerns about their safety record.
