Kenya is facing a growing cholera outbreak, with 12 counties on high alert.
According to the Ministry of Health, the counties at risk are Nairobi, Machakos, Embu, Wajir, Mombasa, Turkana, Makueni, Narok, Garissa, Kajiado, Mandera, and Kisumu.
As of January 2019, a total of 4,961 cholera cases have been reported in Kenya, with 253 confirmed cases, including 147 active cases and 37 deaths.
The outbreak is currently active in four counties: Mandera, Garissa, Turkana, and Nairobi.
Majority of the cases in Nairobi are found in Embakassi East, Emakasi West, Starehe, Ruaraka, Kibera, Lang'ata, Kasarani, Dagoretti North, Westlands, and Kamkunji sub-counties.
Garissa has reported cases at Hagadera and IFO refugee camps, while Turkana has reported cases from Kakuma, Kalobeyei, and Lopur in Turkana West Sub-counties.
Mandera has reported 17 cases, with 4 confirmed.
Meanwhile, three people have been hospitalized in Kirinyaga county with symptoms of Cholera, with one already tested positive.
George Karoki, the Kirinyaga County Director of Health, has urged residents to be on high alert and report to the nearest health facility if they notice any sign of cholera.
