Heavy rains have pounded Nairobi and its environs, exposing a long-standing lie about the city's water supply. For years, the lack of adequate water in dams has been cited as the reason for the Nairobi Water Company's inability to supply enough water to residents.

However, recent events have revealed that this is not the case. The Ndakaini and other dams have been overflowing due to the heavy rains, yet the city water firm still struggles to meet the demands of its residents.

According to the company, the production capacity of all the city water treatment plants and distribution pipelines is 524,600 cubic meters per day, against a total demand of 790,000. This means that increased rainfall will not change the sorry situation.

The solution to this crisis is clear: boost supply and stop wastage of funds through fraudulent procurement. The Water ministry must also get involved at the national level, as neighboring counties also benefit from the city's supply system.

There are several national agencies developing water resources that enjoy generous international donor support, which can be roped in to end the current water crisis. Residents cannot wait any longer and risk the shame of cholera epidemics as they waste time and money each day looking for clean water in the city.

It is now time to prioritize the expansion and refurbishment of Nairobi's water supply system to enhance its status as one of the world's best cities to visit, work, and live in.
