On a day when both Everton and Arsenal announced new managers, the two teams played out a dull 0-0 draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti, Everton's new manager, watched from the directors' box as his team struggled to break down Arsenal's defense. Meanwhile, Arsenal's new head coach Mikel Arteta was also in attendance, having been appointed by the Gunners on Friday.

The result provisionally lifted Everton up one place to 15th on 19 points from 18 games, while Arsenal also moved up one place to ninth on 23 points.

Former Everton caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson, who oversaw a 3-1 win over Chelsea and draws against Manchester United and Arsenal, acknowledged that he would join Ancelotti's backroom staff. 'We wanted three points but what a fantastic performance from us,' Ferguson told BT Sport.

Despite Everton's efforts, the game was marked by a lack of creativity and a series of missed chances. Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was not heavily tested, but Everton's Jordan Pickford produced a superb reflex save to deny Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from close range.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in the closing stages, with Arsenal packing their defense to deal with a flurry of Everton crosses into their penalty area.

Former Arsenal caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg said he was still uncertain whether he would remain at the club as part of Arteta's staff. 'I've been told by the club they want me to stay but I will have a meeting with Mikel tomorrow and hopefully it's a good one,' said the Swede.
