On a chilly Friday evening, a pregnant woman's contractions and labor pains caught the attention of matatu sacco operators at the Embakasi bus terminus.

As bystanders watched in amazement, the woman delivered a healthy baby girl just minutes later.

"I was right on time to hold the baby's head as she came out," said Joseph Anari, a matatu crew member, recalling the dramatic scene.

The mostly male crew members of the Embassava sacco matatus sprang into action, offering their jackets to wrap the baby for warmth and seeking help from women in the crowd.

A woman in the crowd even surrendered her hairband to tie the baby's umbilical cord, while matatu operators controlled traffic to hail a taxi from outside the Kenya National Archives.

Once the taxi arrived, women in the crowd formed a tight circle around the mother and her newborn as they were rushed to Puwmani Maternity Hospital.

Speaking on phone, the elated father of the lucky infant confirmed that his wife and baby girl were in stable condition and were working on being discharged from hospital.
