On Saturday, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni met with Dr. William Ruto at Mubende State Lodge in Kampala, where he pledged Sh10 million towards the construction of the William Ruto Institute of African and Leadership Studies at Makerere University.
According to the Ugandan President, the institute would play a significant role in deepening Africans' knowledge base and furthering research that would transform Africa.
"This institute would go a long way in Africans deepening their knowledge base and furthering research that would transform Africa," said Mr. Museveni.
He emphasized the need for Africa to tell its own story in its own way for its own future.
Dr. Ruto, who arrived in Kampala on Friday evening, later laid the foundation stone for the Institute, which seeks to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning about Africa.
Present at the event were Uganda Ministers Kahinda Otafiire and Frank Tumwebaze, as well as Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.
Others in attendance included Governor Jackson Mandago, MPs Kimani Ichungwa, Mwatib Mwashetani, and Charles Njagagua.
Dr. Ruto expressed his gratitude for being associated with the "magnificent addition to the storied achievements of Makerere University," and emphasized the need for Africa to take charge of its own development.
"One key paradox of our time is the persistence of dysfunction in some parts of the world amidst the tremendous progress made elsewhere," he said.
