Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has expressed his desire for Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen to sign new contracts with the Premier League club, following centre back Toby Alderweireld's deal extension.

Speaking on Friday, Mourinho stated that he was happy with Alderweireld's decision to stay at the club, saying, 'I couldn't be happier. I am honoured to play for this club and am a small piece of getting to the next level.'

Alderweireld, who has been a mainstay in the Spurs defence since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015, has penned a new contract until 2023. The 30-year-old defender would have been free to negotiate with foreign clubs next month.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has stated that the club are not scared to sell playmaker Eriksen to a Premier League rival and are prepared to listen to offers in the January transfer window for a player who has said he wants a new challenge.

Mourinho, however, expressed his desire for Eriksen to sign a new contract, saying, 'The only thing I will tell you about Christian is that I would like him to sign a new contract.'
