Published on December 21, 2019, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning to Kenyans to prepare for rains starting Saturday, following a four-day dry spell.
According to the department, moderate rains are expected in Nyeri, Makindu, Nairobi, Malindi, and Kisii during the day.
Other areas set to experience showers include Kitui, Makindu, Voi, Mombasa, Malindi, and Lamu.
Government Spokesman Cyrus Oguna has confirmed that at least 132 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents.
Approximately 330,000 people have been affected by the heavy rains, which began in October and intensified in November.
Since October, floods and landslides have displaced 17,000 people from their homes, with over 11,000 livestock swept away and an undetermined acreage of farmlands submerged and crops destroyed.
The Kenya Wildlife Services has announced that Amboseli airstrip will remain closed indefinitely due to safety concerns.
However, the service has assured that all hotels and lodges located within their national parks and reserves are accessible by road, and other affected airstrips and roads are fully operational.
