On December 20, 2019, human rights activists in Mombasa and Nairobi called on the government to disclose all information regarding the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) contracts.

Representatives from Katiba Institute, Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri), and International Commission of Jurists (ICJ)-Kenya, including Prof Yash Pal Ghai, Khelef Khalifa, and Kelvin Mogeni, accused the government of keeping the SGR contracts and Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) expenditure secret.

Speaking in Mombasa, Khelef Khalifa stated that the government had signed numerous deals in secrecy with foreign companies, and Kenyans needed to be informed about the agreements as they would ultimately finance these projects.

The activists demanded that the government provide all annexes and documents on SGR contracts within 21 days, failing which they would take legal action.
