Waiguru Backs Down on Threat to Sue King Kaka ¶
On December 17, 2019, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru threatened to sue rapper King Kaka over his song Wajinga Nyinyi, but she has since changed her mind.
Waiguru had accused King Kaka of faking reports of assassination attempts on his life and the summon to the office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
However, in a surprising U-turn, Waiguru announced on Twitter that she would not be proceeding with the lawsuit against King Kaka.
"I recognize that he's a confused attention-seeking young man. I have therefore made the decision not to proceed with the King Kaka suit," she said.
Waiguru further alleged that the song Wajinga Nyinyi was a tool for certain leaders to settle political scores.
"As I have chosen in previous occasions of this nature, I will contend with their masters," she added.
Meanwhile, advocate Nelson Havi released a statement on behalf of King Kaka stating that Wajinga Nyinyi was neither defamatory nor injurious.
"As an artist, our client is duty bound to highlight issues of public interest and make fair comments on the same. In exercising his freedom of expression, our client was referring to the National Youth Service scandal in which Ksh. 791million was embezzled," the letter reads.
On Monday this week, a day after King Kaka released Wajinga Nyinyi on YouTube and other social media platforms, Waiguru threatened to take legal action against him.
However, some top lawyers in the country criticized Waiguru saying artistes have every right to express themselves either through music or art.
