On Jamhuri Day, President Uhuru Kenyatta conferred state awards and honours on several journalists, including former Citizen TV news anchor Hussein Mohammed.

According to a gazette notice dated December 20, 2019, Hussein was among the recipients of the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS).

Before his resignation from Citizen TV, Hussein was one of the most highly-rated news presenters and TV journalists in the country.

Other journalists honoured include veterans Mohammed Khadija Ali, Oyoo Jack Sylvester, and Asiko Festus Omole, who received the Head of States Commendation (HSC), Civilian Division.

Khadija Ali, a renowned radio voice, is best remembered by older generations of radio listeners during the days of VOK (Voice of Kenya).

Her colleagues, Oyoo and Omole, have also been around for a very long time, with Oyoo making a name for himself in football commentary and Omole working as a sports journalist at KBC.
