On December 18, 2019, Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema, held its national congress in Dar es Salaam, where it elected its national leaders.

Freeman Mbowe, who has led the party since 2004, was re-elected as chairman, receiving 886 votes (93.5%) to his opponent Cecil Mwambe's 59 votes (6.2%).

According to a statement issued on Thursday, Mbowe's re-election was a significant milestone for the party, which has been a major force in Tanzanian politics.

During the congress, Mbowe also announced plans to establish an online platform for party members to contribute to the party's day-to-day operations. He stated that the party currently operates on an annual budget of Tsh280 million ($121,000) from membership fees and Tsh3 billion ($1 million) in grants.

With the new digitalized fee collection system, the party aims to collect Tsh15 billion ($1 million) annually, which will enable it to carry out its operations smoothly.
