Kenyan footballers are dominating the shortlist for the Magharibi Michezo Awards, which will be held on Monday in Bungoma County. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in sports across the Western region.
Among the nominees for the men's football award are Joash Onyango, a defender for record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, and Jentrix Shikangwa, a prodigy from Vihiga Queens and Harambee Starlets.
Onyango is nominated alongside Bandari defender Brian Otieno, AFC Leopards midfielder Whyvonne Isuza, and former Gor Mahia captain Harun Shakava, who now plays for Zambian side Nkana FC. Up-and-coming Kariobangi Sharks player Daniel Sakari rounds off the list of men's nominees.
Shikangwa faces stiff competition from her Vihiga Queens teammates Tereza Engesha, Cynthia Shilwatso, Topista Situma, and Oserian's Dorcas Shikobe, as well as Trans Nzoia Falcons goal getter Tumaini Waliaula.
Other nominees for the men's award include Bonfentry Mukekhe from GSU, Elphas Makuto and Brackcides Agala from Kenya Prisons, Sharon Chepchumba from Kenya Pipeline, and Mercy Moim, Joy Lusenaka, and Edith Wisa from Kenya Prisons.
For the women's award, nominees include Gaudencia Makokha from Beach Volleyball, Wokila Chris from Greensharks, Danstone Wabwire from Wazalendo, David Lirhu from Bungoma farmers, Phanice Ayieko Teka from USIU, Sheila Nafula from Orange Leons, and John Washika from Ulinzi Warriors.
Other nominees for the women's award include Daisy Ayodi from Equity Bank, Carol Akinyi from Kisumu Lady Bucks, Liz Okumu from UoN Dynamites, Austin Sikutwa from Menengai Oilers, Joel Inzuga from Stanbic Mwamba, Sam Onsomu from Resolution Impala Saracens, Johnstone Mung'au from Kabras Sugar, Christabel Lindo from Impala Saracens, Stella Wafula from Impala Saracens, Naomi Amuguni from Stanbic Mwamba, Janet Okello from Stanbic Mwamba, Innocent Onyango from Black Mamba, Nicholas Nyongesa from Black Mamba, Morgan Juma Wamalwa from Black Mamba, Jackson Juma Maloba from Strathmore, Teddy Esyepet Sidai from Strathmore, Alexina Musilibi Ambani from KDF Ulinzi, Valarie Adhiambo Were from Nairobi Water, Caren Lutengeya from KDF Ulinzi, Gladys Ayitso Chilo from Nairobi Water, and Brenda Msambai from Nairobi Water.
