Kenyan Artist April Kamunde on Her Journey to Success

April Kamunde, a talented artist and painter, recently made headlines after exhibiting her work at Book Bunk's gala night, 'A Night at the Library', on December 20, 2019.

As a huge fan of the Book Bunk Team and their efforts to restore the McMillan libraries, Kamunde was thrilled to be a part of the event. She showcased one of her paintings, which was up for auction during the gala dinner.

When asked about balancing her art career with the expectations of pursuing a 'real' career, Kamunde admitted that it's not easy. She requires a lot of discipline and has had to adjust her schedule to accommodate her painting.

Primarily working with oil paints on canvas, Kamunde learned to use oil pastels on paper in high school. Her aunt was her first customer and has been her most consistent supporter, giving her the confidence to experiment with different mediums.

Kamunde's work is inspired by local artists such as Mary Ogembo, Panye, and Chela, as well as international artists like Tim Komura. She admires their unique styles and the way they bring their art to life.

Despite facing artistic slumps, Kamunde has found ways to overcome them. She has started painting pieces of images she likes for herself and as gifts for close friends on special occasions.
