On December 19, 2019, a Wajir court found Idle Abdi Haret, the principal of Habaswein Mixed Secondary School, guilty of raping a Form Four student.

The student, who was two days away from sitting for her KCSE exams, testified that Haret offered to give her a lift in his vehicle to a revision centre, but instead diverted to a lonely place in Habaswein town where he sexually assaulted her.

After considering mitigation for leniency, Wajir Senior Resident Magistrate Munene Nyaga sentenced Haret to 10 years in prison, citing the rising cases of sexual abuse in the region.

The convict has 14 days to appeal the decision.
