On December 19, 2019, the Kiambu County Assembly voted to impeach Governor Ferdinand Waititu, a move that has sent shockwaves through the county.
The impeachment process, as stipulated by law, will now be taken up by the Senate, which must convene within 10 days to determine whether the claims against Waititu are substantiated.
According to the law, a special committee will be set up to investigate the allegations, and Waititu will be required to appear before the Senate to answer the charges.
If the Senate finds the claims substantiated, Waititu's fate will be sealed, but if the claims are unsubstantiated, the proceedings will come to an end.
Meanwhile, Waititu's deputy, James Nyoro, has been acting as governor since the governor was barred from accessing the county headquarters due to graft allegations.
Waititu and his wife, Susan Wangari, are facing corruption charges, accused of irregularly awarding themselves Sh580 million tenders.
The impeachment is a significant blow to Waititu's political career, which had been on the rise until he was charged in court.
