As the festive season approaches, Kenya's Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has directed traffic officers to take measures to promote sanity on the roads.
On Thursday, December 19, 2019, in Nairobi, Mr Mutyambai emphasized that it is the responsibility of the passenger to ensure they have a seat after boarding a vehicle.
"Do not blame the conductor or the matatu; responsibility starts with you as a passenger," he said.
Mr Mutyambai also warned motorists and other travelers to exercise caution on all roads, stating that the police and the National Transport and Safety Authority have been instructed to deal firmly with those found flouting traffic regulations.
Places of worship and entertainment joints have been asked to be on high alert during the festivities and thoroughly frisk people and vehicles entering their premises.
The police chief noted that the threat of terrorism is still present despite police having made remarkable success in the fight against it.
Measures have been put in place to ensure safety is maintained during the holidays, including recalling all police officers on leave and deploying officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and Prisons to assist in patrols.
Additionally, all security multi-agencies will be involved in security operations, and alcohol breathalysers will be back on the roads to curb drunk driving.
