Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu's acclaimed film 'Rafiki', a lesbian romance banned in Kenya, will be screened across Africa on DSTV Box Office starting December 23rd, 2019.
The film, which has generated both acclaim and controversy, was banned in Kenya in April 2018 by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for depicting homosexual scenes.
However, in a significant victory for the film's director, Wanuri Kahiu, the High Court temporarily lifted the ban on the film in September 2019, allowing it to participate in the 2019 Oscars Award.
During the limited screening run in Kenya, the film grossed about Sh3.3 million from over 6,500 viewers in major film theaters in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu.
Wanuri Kahiu announced the film's release on DSTV Box Office on Twitter, saying, "We are incredibly excited to announce that Rafiki will be released on DSTV BOX OFFICE on 23rd Dec across Africa (except the Republic of Kenya). Congratulations to all the cast and crew! Our film is Pan-African!"
