On December 19, 2019, the Kenyan Cabinet made significant changes to the country's public holidays. In a move aimed at promoting service and cultural diversity, the Cabinet approved the renaming of two public holidays.
MoI Day, previously marked on October 10th every year, has been renamed Huduma Day. This change is in line with the wish of retired President Daniel Arap Moi, who wanted the day to be celebrated as a day of service and volunteerism.
Boxing Day, which falls on December 26th, has been renamed Utamaduni Day. The new holiday will be set aside to celebrate the country's rich cultural diversity and heritage.
The proposed changes to the Public Holidays Act will take effect once approved by Parliament.
