On December 19, 2019, Opera Mini, a data-saving browser with 100 million users worldwide, partnered with Mdundo, an African music sharing platform, to offer users free access to music downloads.
Through this agreement, Opera Mini users can tap into Mdundo's music library, which features the 100 most popular songs in each of 10 countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
According to Michael Gray, Product Director of Opera Mini Africa, 'Mdundo has changed the way people listen to music on their smartphones. Now with Mdundo support in Opera Mini, music lovers can access a catalogue that includes the best local artists, the most popular songs in their country, and the fastest growing independent local artist platform.'
Mdundo, founded in Kenya six years ago, features the largest catalogues of independent African artists and allows musicians to easily upload their songs, manage their catalogue, and commercialise their music themselves.
As stated by Martin Nielsen, Mdundo's chief executive, 'We love when African artists create new songs or produce new albums, and at Mdundo we are taking the side of the artists. At Mdundo we enable artists to keep track of their fans and we split the revenue generated from the site fairly with the artists.'
