Published on December 19, 2019, the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, has ordered police officers manning roadblocks to focus on excess passengers in Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) during the festive season.

According to the IG, police will now deal with excess passengers individually, rather than targeting vehicle operators. This move aims to curb the practice of overloading PSVs, which poses a significant risk to road safety.

Under the Traffic Act Cap 403, drivers, conductors, and owners of PSVs that carry more passengers than licensed can face a fine of up to Sh20,000 and an additional Sh5,000 for each excess passenger.

Inspector General Mutyambai also emphasized the importance of seat belts and assigned seating for all passengers. He warned motorists against drunk driving and speeding, urging them to remain sober and avoid speeding to prevent road accidents.

Additionally, the IG advised the public to make security arrangements before traveling and to use the police toll numbers 999, 911, or 211 for assistance in case of any problems while on transit.
