As the country approaches the Christmas festive season, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the National Police Service have announced new measures aimed at restoring sanity on the country's roads.

According to the latest statistics, there has been a 13.4% increase in fatality numbers this year compared to last year, with 3,396 people losing their lives between January 1st and December 17th.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and NTSA Director-General George Njao issued a joint statement at Jogoo House, warning motorists against flouting traffic laws and regulations during the festive season.

As part of the new measures, police officers manning roadblocks have been ordered to act against excess passengers in Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), shifting the focus from crew members to individuals.

NTSA Director-General George Njao emphasized that the agency will mount various roadblocks across the country to ensure motorists adhere to traffic laws, and that tough measures have been put in place to nab those breaking traffic regulations.

With raging rains expected to continue in parts of the country, drivers have been urged to be extra cautious.

Inspector General Mutyambai has also assured Kenyans of their security during this festive season, urging them to remain vigilant.
