On December 18, 2019, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha made a crucial announcement regarding the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) during the release of the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Magoha dismissed reports claiming that his ministry had abandoned the NEMIS system, attributing them to 'malicious politicians.'

"I am not a politician and I have no desire to be one. By the grace of God, I am a technocrat, the weakness I have is that I’m just a worker. So keep politics out of my work, because I have no sympathies for people who try to politicize what I’m doing," said the tough-talking CS.

Magoha further stated that NEMIS has been upgraded and is here to stay, with the system now running on a 10G card.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia also made significant announcements, including the posting of 10,000 intern teachers to schools in January to address the current shortage.

Ms. Macharia emphasized that this move aligns with the government’s initiative of 100% transition of students from primary to secondary schools.

She also announced that the commission has started a training exercise for 106,320 teachers in preparation for the Curriculum-Based Establishment (CBE) Grade 4 roll-out in January.

Ms. Macharia cautioned proprietors of private schools against recruiting staff who are not registered with TSC.
