December 18, 2019 - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has confirmed that midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will miss the Club World Cup semi-final against Monterrey due to a muscle injury.
Wijnaldum was injured in Liverpool's 2-0 Premier League win over Watford on Saturday, but travelled with the squad to Qatar.
Although the injury was initially feared to be serious, Klopp stated that it is not as severe as initially thought, and Wijnaldum is undergoing recovery treatment.
“Gini was not as serious as we thought in the first moment, so he’s here doing the first recovery and then we have stuff what is necessary,” Klopp told reporters.
Wijnaldum's fellow Dutch international Virgil van Dijk also missed training in Doha on Monday, but Klopp assured that the defender is not carrying any injury.
European champions Liverpool are looking to capture their maiden Club World Cup trophy, and will face the winner of Wednesday's clash against Monterrey in the final.
