On December 18, 2019, Kenya's Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha announced a bold initiative to rescue young girls forced into early marriages and bring them back to school.
Speaking at Mtihani House while releasing the results of the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), Prof Magoha emphasized the importance of education for girls.
He revealed that his ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Interior to identify and rescue affected girls, ensuring they have access to education.
“Every female child who was pregnant and was blessed with a child must come back to school. We shall work with the Ministry of Interior to make sure the girl child goes back to school,” Prof Magoha said.
Prof Magoha also issued a stern warning to communities practicing early marriages, stating that his ministry would take action to protect the rights of young girls.
“We are also sending a very stern warning to some areas of this country who still have this habit of marrying small female children, that we shall come and get your wife away from you and take her back to school,” he said.
This initiative aligns with the Education Ministry's efforts to implement the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), which aims to ensure a 100% transition of learners from primary to junior secondary school by 2023.
