On December 18, 2019, the Kenyan government provided a significant financial boost to Gor Mahia, the champions of the Kenyan Premier League, with an allocation of Sh8 million through the Ministry of Sports.
The funds will be used to settle the two-month salary arrears of the players and the technical bench, who had resumed training on Wednesday after a two-week strike demanding their dues.
According to Sport PS Kirimi Kaberia, the club followed the laid-down protocols for teams requesting financial aid from the government, and the money was requested in August when the club featured in the continental competition.
Speaking to Nation Sport, Kaberia emphasized that the government supports teams that represent the country in continental matches, and that Gor Mahia deserved the assistance due to their representation of the country.
He dispelled notions of favoritism, stating that any team that represents or represented Kenya outside the country deserves assistance, provided they follow the laid-down rules and regulations.
Gor Mahia coach Steven Polack confirmed that the players had resumed training and were expecting some money by the end of Wednesday.
Reacting to the news, AFC Leopard Chairman Dan Shikanda thanked the government for supporting Gor Mahia but expressed his desire for similar assistance to be offered to AFC Leopards, citing procedural issues that delayed their continental assignment.
