Manchester City's assistant manager Rodolfo Borrell is set to leave the club after Mikel Arteta was named as Arsenal's new manager on December 18, 2019.

Arteta, who is on the brink of signing a three-and-a-half-year contract at Arsenal, will be allowed to pick his own assistant manager, and it is thought that he will turn to Borrell.

Borrell, 48, has a reputation for nurturing talented young players, having been Lionel Messi's first coach at Barcelona, and has also worked with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas.

He originally moved to the Premier League to work with Rafa Benitez at Liverpool, before becoming an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

However, City are likely to demand a seven-figure fee to release Borrell from his contract, after being left furious by Arsenal's approach.

Guardiola has insisted that he doesn't plan to leave Manchester City next summer, although the club have already eyed up Mauricio Pochettino as a potential successor.

Arteta will travel with City for their Carabao Cup quarter-final against Oxford United on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen what the latest is with his potential new assistant.

Guardiola said: "When we were so smart to pick him up and other clubs want him. He’s an incredible person. A good manager, good work ethic that’s why he’s with us. He’s talking with Arsenal so I don’t know what’s going to happen."
