On December 17, 2019, Modern Coast had announced that it had received permission from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to resume normal bus services, citing a letter from NTSA that listed 42 buses cleared to operate.
However, just three hours later, NTSA issued a contradicting statement saying that the suspension of Modern Coast Express had not been lifted.
Police intercepted two Modern Coast buses at Sultan Hamud on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway, leaving 90 passengers stranded. Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan stated that each bus had 45 passengers onboard.
”Necessary action will be taken,” he said, citing the NTSA statement that refuted reports of the suspension being lifted.
