On Wednesday, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) released the KCSE 2019 results, marking the end of a long wait for approximately 700,000 candidates.
According to sources, officials from KNEC held a meeting with the President before submitting the results, a process that was initially expected to be completed before Christmas Day, as Education CS George Magoha had announced.
However, the release of the results was delayed due to protests from a section of teachers who were marking the examinations, citing poor pay as the reason for their discontent.
Markers in Laikipia, Starehe Girls Centre in Nairobi, and Machakos Girls High School had threatened to stall the process, but KNEC later announced that the dispute had been resolved, allowing the marking of the KCSE 2019 papers to resume and be completed around the country on Thursday last week.
Despite the smooth release of the results, concerns over cheating still lingered, with Education CS George Magoha raising concerns over Kisii, Migori, and Nairobi's Eastleigh areas, where several cases of cheating were reported during the exam period.
Magoha revealed that 90 phones were confiscated over suspected cases of cheating, but maintained that there had been no cases of exam leakage, a problem that had plagued previous years.
