On December 18, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko was expected to appear in a Voi court after being charged with assaulting a police officer during his arrest weeks prior.
However, due to his health condition, Sonko was unable to attend the court hearing.
According to a letter written by Dr. Esther Nafula Nekesa, Sonko's doctor, the politician is still undergoing treatment for Hypertensive Urgency, soft tissue injury to the left chest wall, and hip osteoarthritis.
Dr. Nekesa's progress report stated that Sonko had been admitted to the hospital with no previous history of hypertension and was started on antihypertensives and analgesics.
As of the report, Sonko's condition had shown improvement, with reduced chest pain and swelling on the left chest wall.
Dr. Nekesa further stated that Sonko would continue to be on bed rest with close blood pressure monitoring and adjustments to his medication as necessary.
