This archive report was first published on 18 December 2019.

On December 18, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko failed to show up at the Voi law courts, where he is facing three assault charges, citing illness.

According to his lawyers, Sonko is currently recovering at home following doctors' orders and is too sick to appear in court.

Senior Resident Magistrate Frederick Mayaka Nyakundi has postponed the case to January 21, 2020, and ordered Sonko to present himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices in Voi before appearing in court.

Sonko is facing charges of assaulting Coast Regional Police Commander Yakubu Rashid during his dramatic arrest on December 6.

He is accused of three counts of assault, including kicking Yakubu on the thigh, resisting arrest, and using abusive language.

The prosecution has lined up six witnesses in the case.
