On April 12, two Cuban doctors, Assel Herrera and Landy Rodriguez, were kidnapped by suspected al Shabaab militants while on their way to work at Mandera County Referral Hospital.
According to Ines Maria Chapman, vice president of the Cuban Council of Ministers, both doctors are 'well' and efforts are being made to secure their safe return to Cuba.
Chapman, who recently returned from a trip to Kenya, stated that the Kenyan authorities have confirmed the doctors' safety and are working to facilitate their release.
Although Chapman did not disclose the doctors' current location, she assured the public that the Cuban government, along with the Kenyan government, is making significant efforts to resolve the situation.
Additionally, Chapman reported that the remaining Cuban doctors in Kenya are safe and have been relocated to a more secure location, closer to the capital.
