Nairobi Court Pardons Hawker Who Failed to Raise Bill After Eating at Java House

On December 16, 2019, Michael Masinga Ambatsa ordered food worth KSh 1,310 at Java House in Nairobi's Kimathi area, claiming he would pay after eating.

However, Ambatsa failed to pay the bill, prompting the hotel management to take him to court.

According to reports, Ambatsa was summoned to court by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, who asked him if he had decided to eat at Java before he died.

"Ambatsa, did you decide to eat at Java before you died?" the magistrate asked.

Ambatsa eventually confessed to the court that he had made a mistake by ordering food without considering his ability to pay.

Chief Magistrate Andayi then pardoned Ambatsa, citing his "jinga" (foolishness) in ordering food without paying.
