On Monday evening, Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Johnstone Ipara led a team of officers in arresting a 34-year-old suspect in Kiambaa, Uasin Gishu County. The suspect was found with fake currencies worth over Sh45 million in his house, including dollars, pounds, and Kenyan shilling notes.
According to Ipara, the officers had been tracking the suspect after receiving a tip-off from the public, who had complained of increased cases of fake currencies in circulation. The suspect had been entertaining himself at a popular club on the Eldoret-Nakuru highway at around 2am when he was arrested.
After the arrest, the suspect led the officers to his residence, where they found money printing machines, a safe box suspected to have been used to store the fake notes, and briefcases used to carry the bills. The operation was the third targeting fake money printing syndicates recently, and police are also hunting suspects behind the production of fake driving licences and title deeds.
Ipara called on traders and farmers who had fallen victims to the fake money syndicate to report to police stations for investigations to commence. The arrest is a significant blow to the syndicate, which had been targeting unsuspecting traders and maize farmers selling their produce.
