Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is set to face assault charges in Voi on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, after being accused of resisting police arrest and disorderly conduct.

According to the police, Sonko was arrested at a Voi roadblock on December 6, 2019, after a wild goose chase by EACC detectives who raided several of his premises in Nairobi.

During his arrest, Sonko allegedly kicked Coast Regional Police Commander Rashid Yakub on the thigh and insulted others, prompting the police to serve him with court summons to appear in court on Wednesday.

The governor is accused of being unruly, abusive, and violent in an attempt to resist arrest, thereby obstructing police officers from the lawful execution of their duties.

As the embattled governor awaits his court appearance, a planned impeachment motion against him has been shelved, with both the governor and the Nairobi MCAs awaiting a ruling on Friday that will determine whether Sonko can be allowed back in office.

The case by the council of governors at the court of appeal seeks to challenge and reverse Justice Mumbi Ngugi's ruling barring county bosses implicated in graft from accessing their offices.

With the court of appeal's verdict expected to have far-reaching ramifications on county governance, there are already accusations against Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal about testing the court's orders and outright defiance.
