At least 7 migrants lost their lives in a tragic incident off the Moroccan coast, while 70 others were rescued in a daring operation.

According to a Moroccan military source, the coastguard vessel retrieved the bodies and rescued the survivors, including 10 women and a baby, who were found in a 'very poor state'.

The survivors were transferred to Nador in northern Morocco for medical care, while the bodies of three women were among the seven retrieved.

The incident occurred when a boat carrying around 100 migrants headed towards Spain capsized overnight, with 24 still missing, according to Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras.

Since 2014, nearly 25,000 people have died trying to reach Europe for political and economic reasons, with over 19,000 drowning in the Mediterranean, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Spain remains a key entry point for migrants seeking a better life in Europe.
